ARCASIA 16th STUDENTS JAMBOREE

As highlighted by ARCASIA organization, the event student jamboree is a gathering event of architectural students from member countries of ARCASIA under the auspices of the ARCASIA Committee for Architectural Education.
The objectives of this event are as follows:

to facilitate talented Asian students of architecture

to travel in the region and experience the architecture of different but related environment from their own;

to foster among the up and coming generation of architects in the region a better understanding of each other's countries and their contemporary conditions and problems;

to encourage the building of inter-personal contacts between the architectural students in the region;
-
to promote an awareness among Asian architectural students of the role and work of ARCASIA and ACAE, and to engender their support to and future participation as architects in these institutions;
-
Liven ARCASIA deliberations by the presence of students.
PAM in collaboration with IIUM (International University of Islamic Malaysia) became the host for this year’s ARCASIA. There are about 350 students from different countries that participated in this jamboree. The student delegates were from Malaysia, China, Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea, Nepal, Indonesia, Japan, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The major activities for this year ARCASIA student jamboree mainly related to expose the students from outside toward Malaysian heritage and culture. The organizing committee was formed by architecture academician from multiple higher education institutes. It included the host IIUM, University Putra of Malaysia (UPM), TAR College and UCSI University under the supervision of PAM.
The event started from 23rd June 2014 until 28th June 2014. First day of the event on 23rd June 2014 was the registration day for participants. There were 9 busses to collect foreign delegates from KLIA and KLIA 2. All of the delegates were accommodated at Mahallah Sumaiyah IIUM, with the capacity of 4 pax/room. The opening ceremony at night saw delegates being briefed about the regulations and details of the programme.
Heritage Trail
Students were transported by 9 buses from IIUM to the heritage trail site. For the morning session, all of the students were divided into two groups, where one group visited Merdeka and textile museum meanwhile another group visited Kampung Baru and Brickfield Road. The tours itself was assisted by nine professional tourist guides.

In the afternoon, both of the groups gathered in Anniversary Theatre for lunch. While all participants enjoyed their meal, they watched the ‘kompang’ competition which was held at the same venue. The competition had primary school students aged from 7 to 12 years old. Foreign delegates seem to enjoy the session as they could watch and experience one of the Malaysian music culture.

The following sessions were to visit Central Market and Petaling street. All groups of students were transported to Central Market and they were on their own to explore the shops and observe the ambience and activities surrounding Central Market. Just after that, students were brought by the committee to tour along Petaling Street Market before heading back to IIUM.

Mural Imprint
Lafarge coordinated this session as they provided the tools, space, equipments and media for participants to draw up their creativity. The purpose of this activity was to create a memorable pathway along Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur. Students were divided into groups according to their nationality. They were expected to create the mural patterns that reflect their own country, in term of culture and logo in a creative method. Each group was allocated a 5m² ares on the pathway to create their own mural.

Students were given around two hours to finish their murals. In the end, the winners were the delegates from Vietnam.

OPENING CEREMONY & CREATIVE DESIGN LECTURE

Arcasia Student Jamboree 2014’s opening ceremony was held on Wednesday, 25th June 2014 at the International Islamic University Main Campus, in Gombak. Attended by 350 students from more than 17 Asian countries, this event had also attracted local and international academicians around Asia. The opening speech was delivered by the Deputy President of Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) Ar. Mohd. Zulhemlee who is also the chairman of PAM Education committee, followed by a welcoming speech by Deputy Dean of Kulliyah of Architecure and Environmental Design (KAED) Faculty Asst. Prof. Dr. Srazali Aripin. The opening ceremony was officially launched by Dato’ Ar. Hajeedar after addressing the crowd with his inspirational talk.
In conjunction with the opening ceremony, Arcasia also organized a Creative Design lecture entitled Colors of Harmony. The two guest speakers were Ar. Razin Mahmood from Razin Architect and Mr. Martin Duplantier from Martin Duplantier Architectes, France. Both of the speakers shared their works and views on architecture practice. This sharing session ended with Question and Answer sessions with both respective guest speakers.
Kampungku Activities
In Conjunction to Arcasia Student Jamboree 2014’s opening ceremony IIUM also organized Kampungku Activities. These activity were held at the riverside area in IIUM. The main objective of the activities was to promote local and traditional cultural activities such as games, dances and cuisine to the participants of Arcasia Student Jamboree 2014 consisting of local and international students from 17 Asian countries. Not to forget, they are promoting local fruits as well.
A few delicacies booths were set up at the open shaded riverside area. While cooking traditional local cuisines such as lemang, ketupat and rendang, all participants were excited to play along traditional games such as Batu Seremban, Congkak, Tenteng and tons of other traditional games around the traditional delicacies booth area that was facilitated by KAED’s students.
Besides merely enjoying our local and traditional heritage, most of the international delegates were eager to share their own local traditional heritage as well, especially Bangladeshi delegates. They were not shy to dance and sing their traditional songs.
Kampungku activities end at 6.00pm to allow all participants to proceed to the dining area for their dinner.
