2014 International Field Studies Program, UCSIU-CYCU collaboration since 2007.
Assoc. Prof Teoh Chee Keong
Since 2007, a total of 74 students from Taiwan Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) have participated in the International Field Studies Program (IFSP), hosted by School of Architecture & Built Environment (SABE), UCSI University. Students gain practical field experience through work and research with SABE, local NGOs and Arts Organizations, under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Teoh Chee Keong.
The field studies program consists of two parts. First, there will be several field trips to various locations in Malaysia to assist the students in acquiring a basic understanding of local society and environment; the students will then be involved in community projects as international interns with local NGOs.
Through the years, the IFSP has developed outstanding relationships with well-known NGOs, such as Penang Heritage Trust, Perak Heritage Society, LostGen and several local communities, and has completed projects like measured drawing, site surveying, and cultural mapping in more than 10 places in Malaysia.
This year, the IFSP received 6 students from CYCU and they are now stationed in Kuala Sepetang, a fishing village near Taiping and undergo several studies with Kuala Sepetang Youth Association. The studies will contribute to the understanding of the sanitary problem and finding new solution for waste control and management.
Besides the environmental studies, the students are also taking part in a traditional trades and cultural activities documentation project which will help to increase understanding and awareness of environmental sustainability as well as the conservation of intangible cultural heritage. The final results are to be presented as publications and travelling exhibitions shown in different places.
